For years, I was under the spell of Neil Gaiman, the British writer who wrote books such as Sandman, Coraline, American Gods, Stardust, and others. He was by far the best when it comes to writing mythology.
But when it comes to graphic S & V, there is none better than Frank Miller. Heck, he made Batman a freaking g*dd@mn Batman! And what about Sin City? How graphic can you get? Then we have his take on Daredevil.
And last but certainly not the least, Alan Moore is the "god" of comic book writers. Just read Watchmen. It's twisted (much more than V For Vendetta which he incidentally wrote) and astonishing that he was able to deconstruct the concept of superheroes.
